Renting a Bike in San Diego

I'm going to be in San Diego Feb 5-7. I'm looking to rent a bike while I'm there and hopefully get some riding in. Does anybody from the area have a recommendation? I would rather not rent a Hardley, and it looks like there may be a Ducati rental local. I would also love it if someone local wanted to show an out of towner some good riding areas.

Thanx in Advance
Bill

I've rented Beemers 2x from Don Picker at California Rentals in San Diego. If you don't want a BMW, perhaps he could direct you to another source. If your travels take you to S Francisco in the future, Dubbelju Rentals rents BMW, HD and Triumph.

You'll need to talk with some locals about the best riding, and to confirm the condition of the area (mudslides and forest fire damage). As a tourist, for starters, I rode to Julian (close by) then to Palomar Mountain to the observatory. Coincidentally, the weekend I went, BMW Club of San Diego was holding their annual rally in Pauma Valley, close to Palomar.

Thanks Bob, I checked them out online too. I'll keep that in mind.
I just hope I don't look too stupid with a Triumph jacket on another brand...

Check out our local monthly motorcycle mag. it's online at www.ridersreview.com. There's plenty on info that you are looking for. Look at the digital version. The weekend you are here, the motocross races will be at qualcomm, but there may be other rides planned. You can also go to www.meetup.com and there are 3 or 4 San Diego motorcycle groups that always have something going on. wished i could help, but i am already committed for stuff that weekend.

julian is always good, if it's not on the weekend. There's another road called the sunshine/sunrise/sun-something or other that's also pretty good. There's also hwy 94 that takes you to Campo where's there's a railroad museum, or used to be anyway.

The racer wannabes are out in force (and so are the police) on the weekends. We have too many fatalities and bad accidents out there, and it is always on a weekend. Be careful out there.

Thanx for all the input. I think I have a line on a Ducati Monster to rent. I'm looking forward to getting away from the frozen East Coast! As for the crazies you oughta try riding around the Philly area!!!

They do push them fast out there

I got a word of advice from Don Picker of CA Rentals several years ago, when I picked up a rental Beemer from him, that stuck with me. "Don't try to stay with the locals ...... they ride these roads 12 months out of the year, and know every turn in them ....".

Also, I recall seeing three guys digging a sportbike out of the side of a hill where it had low sided into the dirt. It was nearly horizontal, and buried up the the axles in the dirt. Quite a sight. This was on the road going up to Palomar Observatory.

--------------------------------------------
Hope the weather is good for your ride. Beautiful scenery, great roads, and it has to be 50 degrees warmer than PA!

Bob
