Sorry, not a thread really, just a vent.
Everyone knows it rains in Ireland, but this is getting ridiculous.
Irish Times tonight.
It has been raining for the last three weeks, on and off, but mostly on. The ground is super-saturated. Add a force 8, gusting force 9 gale and a thunderstorm (almost unheard of in this part of the world) that killed people on the streets, melted electricity transformers and dumped an inch of hail in about ten minutes and the area is now having quite serious problems.
The local town, Skibbereen, was being evacuated this evening ahead of high tide (although quite a way inland, the Ilen River is tidal), along with quite a few other local towns. The main road to Cork was cut in at least two places (hint - the region's hospital is in Cork) and as for the minor roads, well, they're not much good at the best of times.
We're due another bigger storm on Saturday and it's not going to stop raining until the middle of next week, and then only for a day or two. I'm glad we've got the boat, although I wouldn't like to be out in this kind of wind.
The kids are happy 'cos we're up the hill and school was cancelled and it's all a bit of an adventure, but this is not going to do an area already hit hard by the recession any good.
I ordered a snorkel for the Landrover a few years ago, but never bothered to fit it. I might have to go and bolt it on tomorrow.
Still, at least the internet connection's still up and runn
