Bad weather...

Sorry, not a thread really, just a vent.

Everyone knows it rains in Ireland, but this is getting ridiculous.

Irish Times tonight.

It has been raining for the last three weeks, on and off, but mostly on. The ground is super-saturated. Add a force 8, gusting force 9 gale and a thunderstorm (almost unheard of in this part of the world) that killed people on the streets, melted electricity transformers and dumped an inch of hail in about ten minutes and the area is now having quite serious problems.
The local town, Skibbereen, was being evacuated this evening ahead of high tide (although quite a way inland, the Ilen River is tidal), along with quite a few other local towns. The main road to Cork was cut in at least two places (hint - the region's hospital is in Cork) and as for the minor roads, well, they're not much good at the best of times.
We're due another bigger storm on Saturday and it's not going to stop raining until the middle of next week, and then only for a day or two. I'm glad we've got the boat, although I wouldn't like to be out in this kind of wind.

The kids are happy 'cos we're up the hill and school was cancelled and it's all a bit of an adventure, but this is not going to do an area already hit hard by the recession any good.

I ordered a snorkel for the Landrover a few years ago, but never bothered to fit it. I might have to go and bolt it on tomorrow.

Still, at least the internet connection's still up and runn

Sorry to hear about the troubles there Richb. We visited Ireland about this time last year, and really liked the area around Cork and Killarney.
I must say the weather was much better last year; it only rained one day the week we were there.

The North and West of England is getting it too. And Birmingham is forecast it for tomorrow. Its really unseasonably warm and strong southerly winds are wrong for this time of year. The weathers telling us something!

Yes indeed, I saw some pictures of the flooding. That sucks - stay safe!

I think I know how you feeling. Our weather here in Bellingham has been like the rest of the country thinks is normal. The storms keep rolling in out of the Pacific with 50-60 mph winds. Makes for uncomfortable nights. Here's a radar pic that been typical lately.

We are getting a break right now but more is coming from the west.

Unhappy

I learned by tonight's evening news that my complaint about our rain here in Washington was very petty compared to what you folks are getting. Our evening news showed the flooding in Ireland and NW England was on the scale of a 1000 year storm.

I'm sorry, my friend. Do take care. I'm guessing that very few on this forum have no idea of your troubles. Remember:

Of course, this guy has a bit of sun. We've all been in your shoes, though. In the American South, it rains virtually every day in the summer, around 5PM. I do feel for you on the wind, though.

Suck up, brother. We're out there, with you. Remember, whenever you see a bad hurricane on the news...some yahoo like us outrunning it.

I'm guessing there's a pub open somewhere too. Stay dry & be safe. Drink Guinness.
