Is this really a free speech area?

this areas advertises itself as:

'' The Biker Cafe' at the end of the Universe. C'mon in, we talk about everything on Earth and beyond.''

So are we allowed to talk about everything then or what are the limits?

If we get a lively thread going do the moderators just cut it off? Is there an energetic over zealous moderator lurking to cut us off in our prime I wonder?

Phoenix

Good answer bugeyez, and as it happens the correct one.

You know, this really is an excellent forum. There has been some seriously good debate of a lot of issues. It is a shame that some people get so upset when their thread is closed, but in truth, the more difficult topics will often end up closed. There are a number of people here who are extremely good at debate, and who also have solid beliefs. Inevitably the discussion will end up circular, and when that happens we mods lock the thread. Sorry that you take it so personally, but it's for the best. We have a separate area where such threads are debated and considered, and in many cases we have reopened threads for further discussion.

Continually banging on about how your thread was closed is, I'm afraid, a little bit petty. Perhaps even immature? Sorry - it's how I feel. We moderators are not paid (just a confirmation for you), it is a voluntary service we provide. We sometimes go wrong. Well not me obviously People can PM us and ask for explanations / suggest alternatives - but let me tell you this - 99% of PMs I get about such matters are abusive. The other 1% get considered and acted upon somehow.

Anyway - really - we are totally open to these "freedom of speech" discussions, but this is getting a bit tiresome to have so many in one go. Let it go.

Just remember, this is a private site. You enter into discussions under the aup, and we reserve the right to close threads based on that, and to close those that are done, out of control or going nowhere.

Now why not go and tell us what you think about the electric bikes link I posted?

My thanks to the moderators for keeping this place, clean and friendly.

There are many many other place to go and play if you find this place does not suit your needs.

The limits are the AUP. As I've explained before, we generally only shut down threads if they 1) begin to include personal attacks, are are obviously (in the opinion[s] of the moderator{s}) about to descend into personal attacks/a flame war, or 2) are just plain dragging on.

I'm usually very proud of the members of this forum, and the dignity and respect with which we discuss very personal, very controversial topics. You all deserve a lot of credit. The thread lock function exists for a reason, but it's much more the exception than the rule. Let's avoid personal attacks, not repeat ourselves more than 15 or 20 times in one thread (yes, I'm pointing at myself there too), and everything will continue to roll along pleasantly.

+1 to HiD. The thread closures I have seen usually involved a thread that started off on a massively broad topic that gets people motivated to take part in. Because of the broad topic though it often spider webs into a bunch of sub-topics, where probably, one of the sub-topics could have served as the main thread. You have to keep it herded somehow. To the moderators defense though, often times someone will turn around and keep one of those sub-topics going and start up a thread on that. I think that is more than fair and is a good way to conduct things. I know there have been a few closed for personal attacks but I think more have been closed due to the topic beginning to spiral out of control and going nowhere...could be my memory though.
