Does anyone travel with a netbook?
Ya ya I know it's 1.6/1GB/160GB. But how much power do you need when mobile and, say, sending ride report posts? As a bonus, you can prop it on your tank and a neoprene sleeve and ramble about the skank outside of El Paso.
Do you guys/girls have success with netbook travel vs. smartphone?

LOL...I must be archaic because I travel with a worn and well used Ordnance Survey map in my back pocket along with a moleskine pocket diary booklet. Applying pen to paper hasn't failed me yet.

MOLESKIN!!!!!
I keep one in my tank bag. Sure, Windows Mobile (meh) has a pocket Office package, but I love my moleskin. When I have a moment of (rare) brilliance while riding scenic, I pull over and whip out my pen. Not a stylus. Not an iPhone.
Moleskin.
Yeesh, and I misspelled it!

I don't own a netbook and will never buy one.
I have a 12" core 2 duo laptop which is far better suited to my needs.
It rarely leaves the house, when I'm out and about on the bike the last thing I want are links with "civilisation" I ride my bike to "get away from it all", even my phone gets switched off.
Bike: check
Waterproofs: check
Tent: check
Sleepingbag: check
Stove: check
Mess tins: check
Water container: check
Sorted.

That's the spirit!! Doesn't have to be profound or Hemingway quality...I think the act of doing it is enough. I am on my second booklet right now and one day when my son acquires the creamsicle from me, he will get the moleksines, the maps, the certifcate from the 50th Anniversary show...all of it. He will get these things with an added; "here you are son, now its your turn." It brings the personal side to why I head out alone and roll down the road on two wheels with a map and writing booklet. People I have met, places I have seen...just experiences in general. Compile them up together and it really adds to the experience and means something...at least it does for me.

Valid points, all. And you mentioned that you don't leave the house with it, somewhat negating the idea of owning an ultra-portable.
I like being in touch so that I can communicate; decline people contacting me. I'm hard for netbooks because they fit in a tank bag, nestled easily between one foul and used shirt or the clean ones, on top.
I have never made a cross-country trip with one. hence the thread. I think I answered my own question, though. How much power do you really need in the middle of the desert?

Just upgraded to Blackberry Storm 2 and love it. It's great for the bike.

Apparently about that much; I think those are pretty close to the specs for my laptop.
Writing with a lump of coal on the back of a shovel is all well and good, but when I'm on a trip that's more than one night, I'm going to have something with a CPU so I can download the photos! Here's an example. The pictures are a big part of a ride like that for me, so I don't want to wait until I get home to see them on something bigger than a 2" or 3" LCD.
But, my laptop is pretty big (it barely fits in my tailbag - the better to watch movies was my thinking when I bought it), so you may have just put me in the market for a netbook.
