Have you hugged your bike today?

No, I'm not referring to knee-hugs on the tank and torso melds under the screen on some desolate, 120mph expanse of slab. I mean - have you humanized your bike lately? Have you thanked her for taking care of you, and delivering on your trust?

I was just in the garage having a cigarette and it occurred to me that this screaming Jezebel wh*re of a machine is literally my life and, possibly, death. Each time I scrub off and set up a corner this bike understands my commands and delivers me to a safe exit. Hell, I'm no racer...but people die at 70 mph every day.

I work nights, so it's entirely appropriate for me to still be in my robe at 3:18PM CST. And I just hugged my bike.

I always give my bikes pats on the tanks when they get me home safely and without any mechanical incidents. They get a lot of pats.

Hahaha! Well, it's not my secret. I have to hand it to the blokes who built it in '64.

I got home from a ride and both carbs were almost falling off the intakes, all the cylinder base nuts were 1/2 turn loose, and the tach gearbox had essentially exploded and dumped oil all over my right boot. But the key phrase here is "got home from a ride."

Man, that Atlas motor likes to shake.

Have decided to remain in my robe and drink beer all night. Decoded: I'll be staring at my bike eeach time I need a cigarette, which is amplified by the beer.

It's the bug-eyes of the Speed Triple (any year, really, post '96). She's looking at me! Imploring. "C'mon, Alex! Haven't I been good to you?"

Temptress wench...

Yep, and I just tucker her away for the winter in the spare bedroom.

Besides being might purty to look at its also easier to climb aboard once in a while to help keep that feelin alive.

I had a landlord who ragged me for bringing my bike inside. "It doesn't leak oil."

I moved.

Yes, I have. But Misty is kind of peeved with me, since I've been out of town for 5 of the last 6 weeks, and we missed all of October's riding. Granted, it's the only month this year we haven't been out, but she mumbled something about not even bringing her a souvenir from the UK...

My first bike was "Lucille." I haven't named the subsequent bikes.

You can never go home, again.
