What do you do if you find an illegal gun?

Whatever else you do, don't turn it in to the police...

Because possession of the gun is....illegal

This is like something you might see in the Onion, too friggin funny (unless you happen to be the poor bloke in the story).

Amazing. Government keeping us all safe.

Where is this blogger from? I'm guessing the U.K., judging by some of the other posts.

"Strict liability" is every bit as insidious as mandatory punishments for (usually) inconsequential drug offenses. They strip the meaning of "judge" from the proceedings in favor of a catch-all punishment. No matter the country, the concept is horses**t.
The putrid end of this reasoning can be seen in privatized prisons such as we have in America. These groups in turn lobby for mandatory minimums for (usually) inconsequential drug offenses, resulting in judges having ZERO, er, judgment. This is almost always sold as being "tough on crime" or, "for the children."

If a judge has no discretion to mitigate so-called "strict liability" (or other borderline examples) what's the point?

Common sense says if you find a dicarded weapon (nearly any country) that perhaps the police might have an interest. Law abiding people would probably turn it in to police. Someone please explain what sort of crime was committed.
Aren't shotguns still legal in the UK if your willing to jump through the required hoops and pay the proper fees?

"If the law supposes that, then the law is an ass, a idiot!"

The newspaper story said it was a sawed off shotgun. Illegal just about everywhere.

Well I would do one of two things take it in or call them to have them retrieve it where it lies. I have a carry permit and with that was a back round check. I don't think I would be questioned if I was to find one and bring it directly to the PD. But you never know.

The real 'crime' in the story is that the judge has been demoted to referee.

If one does ever find a discarded weapon, have the police pick it up. Weapons used in offenses are often discarded, of course the patrol officer may pick it up bare handed, but at least it won't have 'your' prints.
