A Norton...Would You?
So if you could get a 1970 Norton Commando 750 that is a survivor, not extensively hacked or modded, but no show winner, for $3500US, would you buy it?
No intention of getting rid of my Speed Triple, but there is something about a classic bike...
The thing is, I already have too many unfinished projects, but if this is a great deal???

Nope; you don't want to mess with it! BTW, where did you say it was?

It depends on what kind of shape it's in. If it runs decent, it might be worth it. The Norton Twins have a beautiful sound. I knew 2 guys with identical '75 Dunstall 850 Commando's that were sweet bikes. They both broadsided a car in Orlando, totalling both. If I had extra money to spend, I would track down another '74 Trident like the one I used to have. What was the question again?

In my opinion, there has never been a bike that looked, sounded or felt more like a motorcycle than a Commando. A properly running Commando has an ease of handling that is largely unmatched by modern bikes because of its light weight and narrow tires. With that said, literally millions of people worldwide feel that way too, so all things Commando are pricey even in today's weak economy.
A rough specimen probably would cost as much as the selling price to bring up to good condition for a "runner" (show condition would be much more expensive). On the plus side, there is far better availability of parts (and much better quality parts) now, than there was in the 1970's (at least in the U.S.). Based on what I've seen on eBay over the last couple of years, $3500 is a pretty good price for a running Commando in any reasonable condition. However, I'm sure there are local "finds" that go for less than the prices for nationally-advertised bikes.
If I was interested in a Norton, I would buy a copy of Walneck's Classic Cycle and compare the prices/condition of the ones listed to the one you are considering. In general, most people feel that an 850 Mk. II (1973 -1974) is the ultimate example of the Commando. The 850 cases are slightly wider to accommodate larger crankshaft bearings. I would never consider a 750 Combat-engined Commando, unless I knew its complete mechanical history (Combat engines were very fragile). Ultimately, turning the average used Commando into a reliable probably means a complete drive train (i.e. engine, gearbox, clutch, chain, sprockets, etc.) and electrical rebuild. Fortunately, the bikes are fairly simple if you are mechanically knowledgeable.

Yes, had one, would have another like a shot - as long as it had a good overhaul....

Five years from now $3500 is going to look dirt cheap and you will love your Norton.
