Anyone know people in the press, PR or Publishing business? Need Help

I have just written my first novel (in fact two but the first has been accepted for publishing and the second I've just sent off)

I'm told that with 130,000 new titles published every year it's hard to get noticed and publishers now have no real budget to promote books (unless you are a JK Rowling or a Stephen King); they just print them and get them in the stores.

So as the author they expect me to do lots of self promotion which is fine but I could use some help. The best place to start is with the people you know so I'm starting here!

If anyone knows people who work for any sort of press or PR companies, publishers etc, even if you've not spoken in years or just a friend your wife knows from school would you mind helping out?

I'd just like a post below with a yes for now if you can help and then when the book is in print (takes about 4-6 months apparently to hit the shelves) I can PM and ask for an address or contact details of the people to send them a copy of the book and a short letter of introduction.

Many thanks

Peter

Have you considered an internet publisher? They offer a range of prescribed packages, at different rates, some of which include listing the book as a new release on the web retail sites, such as Amazon, for a few days (thus attracting attention to a potentially large audience). With print-on-demand technology most internet publishers undertake to get the book on sale on the retail websites and on the bookshop shelves just six weeks after the ms is signed off and the publishing package that you've selected is signed off & paid for.

This method cuts out literary agents and the traditional publishers, who by and large still work in the same manner as in Victorian times! Your book should therefore have a cheaper sell price using an internet publisher & you should get paid royalties every three months and with next to no delay (traditional publishers tend to pay every 6 months with up to a 90 day delay ).

Anyway, it was just a thought .

Thanks for the ideas... I have been looking at CreateSpace to POD and their tie in with Amazon which may be the route I use in the US (I'm UK based) to get an instant distribution channel there...

Obviously promotion is still vitally important though however it gets to market, hence the request.

You sound as if you have some experience in this market place so any ideas are gratefully received. Thanks again.

My wife and brother inlaw grew up with Dick Laplante, who wrote Detours and Hog Fever. I don't want to discourage you but read the industries reviews on Laplante. Jeff my brother-in-law has written two novels that have never really got off the ground but were very well written. It is the most difficult business in the world to get help according to Jeff. PR people aren't going to do work for free.Good-Luck..

Might help you

I've got a book published by these guys

http://www.iuniverse.com/

They do have several promotional packages as well as printing services.
I haven't been on their website in a while but they do seem to have something to offer along the lines you are looking for, give them a jingle and see.....
