Thoughtful Wife
My wife was trying to be thoughtful the other day. Her and the kids kids make an annual 4th of July trip from our home in Nashville, TN back to her home town of Pawhuska, OK. I go when my schedule permits and I plan to go this year. She suggested that this year I follow them on my bike! Ok, nice thought but 700 miles of 70 - 80 mph, mostly I-40 in less than 12 hours on the Bonnie does not sound like fun to me. I am sure that the bike would do it but I don't think my body would.
She doesn't quite get it. Needless to say, she doesn't ride. I would be up for it if I could take 3 days and change the route to go across IL and MO into OK. Maybe catch some Route 66? But while we were on the subject I explained the differnce between the Bonnie and the big touring bikes. This positioned me to put in a pitch for a Rocket III, (as an addition and not a replacement of course). My pitch didn't fly very far.
Maybe I could sell her on the idea of a trailer? A nice closed trailer that would have enough room to carry some luggage so that we would not be so cramped in her Escape? It would just be coincidental that it would have tie downs, a ramp, and enough room for the Bonnie? Any chance of pulling this one off?

What do you mean? This doesn't look like great riding to you?
Besides, you're taking the wrong approach here. Add 200 miles and do a Saddlesore 1000!

Frog in a blender
I can't say that it does. I can't take that kind of thrashing for too long at a time. I would be ready to stop before I got to Memphis. Now with a comfy seat and good country roads I think I could do 300 or 400 miles in a day. I think I might like a big touring bike sometime in the future but I still wouldn't want to do the superslabs.

Simple solution, leave two days early and meet them two thirds of the way there.....
Get the best of both worlds and you can come home a different way!

Ding-ding-ding. We have a winner. Great answer. I'll have to use that when we do some traveling this summer.

Not enough time
Can't get away from work that long. I have plenty of time to take but no time to take it. I would like to take a wandering trip cross country some time but that is going to have to wait for now. I may try to sneak out for a 2 or 3 day ride this fall when it is not so hot. I really don't like the combination of 95 degrees F and 90% humidity. We are working our way into that pattern here now.

Tell her you love the idea but would rather ride to OK in the mini van with her and the kids but the next weekend you want to go East Tenn solo and do the Dragon for a few days.

Oh yeah!
That is a ride I want to do. A 3 day trip would be plenty. Day 1 I could wander my way east across SE TN. Day 2 ride the Dragon and surrounding area. Day 3 ride back home. Sounds like good late September or Early October ride. Make it a Tues-Thurs so there would not be so much traffic.
