Motorcycles and philosophy do mix

Howdy, howdy all you deep thinkers out there. If you liked Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, you might want to check this out:

http://fish.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/0...les/?th&emc=th

Don't know about you, but when I'm not riding I'm thinking about bikes, reading about bikes, and dreaming about bikes. Now maybe this is a waste of time- what with work, beer, wife and family etc. getting in the way of the mission- but you gotta follow your heart. In case anyone's interested, here's a shot of the Vincati from last weekend's Brit Bash car and bike show.

Mix? They're joined at the hip!

Motorcycles take me places I'd otherwise never go, on this planet and in my mind.

When I was in my early 20's I read Zen/art of motorcycle maintenance about 6 times in a row. I just couldn't grasp the deepest truth that book was getting at. The author is something of a genius but uses an ungodly amount of words to arrive at some relatively simple truths. One day, looking at the cover and contemplating throwing the damn thing away it just came to me. I haven't picked it up since.

Bradleyallen, that's the point, if you get it, you get it, but if you don't no one can explain it to you.

It took me three reads years ago to get it.....

Interestingly, sailing has a similar "zen" to it. It rains, or it doesn't. It's windy, or it's not. The direction of the wind is random.

If you're around motorcycles, or yachts for long enough, you'll get it eventually.

Mick

Miker, you know that Pirsig's second book was centered around a sailing yacht rather than a bike, eh?

Medic, no I didn't..... I have only recently got back into sailing and so have not really one anything more than get out on the water and amongst the weather.... I'll have to have a look for it now.

Excellent book, like most It took a few years to understand it, being a practicing Buddhist didn 't make it any easier....lmao....

I haven't read it in a long time, like 1965. As I recall, it conveyed a 'be here now' sort of philosophy with the 'here' being around or on a motorcycle. 'Be here now' is a great philosophy because we always find that we experience consciouness only in the present.

Terrifically well done machine the Vincati - it looks like a lot of soul went into it.

Just an idle thought, so what motorcycles would philosophers ride and why I wonder - any thoughts out there?

Hobbes on a Honda ( Leviathan being I guess his most famous work and that describes the big H)

Nietsche on a Kawasaki -" That which does not kill you makes you stronger" sums up a ZX10 or even an H2 750 for the oldies amongst us

Which philosoper would ride a Triumph .........?
