Flying Merkel

I saw this bike today

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HxzHoAoA5E

along with lots of other nearly 100 year old bikes like Pope's, Indian's Harley's Thor's, Reading Standard's, Sears, Iver Johnson's, Excelsior's and many other pre war (WW I ) bikes. I haven't been to an AMC meet in about 20 yrs cause most of the bikes were Knuckle Heads and Pan Heads and Brit bikes were 2nd class bikes. The nice thing when last there I did pick up a Norton International and BSA Goldstar cheap cause they weren't Harleys or Indians.

When I got home I asked my wife for a Flying Merkel and right away she said "NO!"

That's because you haven't installed the trapeze in your bedroom yet!

Man, does that look and sound cool! I think, however, I'll keep my Speedy...

It seems the Merkels were very advanced for their time and had a very illustrious racing history. They developed the "Mono Shock" rear suspension in 1905. When the mono shock reemerged in the modern era it was touted as the latest thing in suspension technology.

Wow, that is amazing! I can see why there are so few of them around though. Lots of things to bend up in a fall over. Did you see the chain fling going on? That is _not_ Ralph Nader approved... not one bit.
