On bike video

I've been fooling around with on bike video on my T100 for several months now trying to find a camera the works sufficiently well under the conditions that prevail when mounting on a motorcycle. The latest camera I've tried is an Oregon Scientific ATC3K which is a small self contained camera that records to an SD card and runs off 2 AA batteries. It seems to handle the vibrations better than most cameras I've tried but it is only a 640 x 480 camera and video & audio quality is only average. For US$155.00 it is a pretty good deal though and on the plus side it is easy to set up and use, it comes with several mounting attachments that allow you to mount it to your handlebars or to your helmet as well as many other locations.

Here's a sample of what the camera can do, I had it mounted to the bars up against the lefthand controls and underslung. I had to tape a bit of foam over the onboard microphone to limit the wind noise.

The web site for the camera is here:-

The camera itself.

The included mounting kit.

Nice job on the video,if you don't mind some constructive criticism adding some music would make it a little more interesting. The clarity is excellent.

+1 on the video clarity, Aussie. I'm impressed.

Thanks for the positive comments. I don't have a problem with constructive criticism although I posted this video as a demonstration of the cameras abilities rather than a demonstration of my editing abilities (or lack thereof).

I'm only learning this video lark and my production techniques are still rather primitive at this stage. In this particular case I only had access to basic editing tools (trimmer & joiner) for the avi files the camera produces so adding transitions or sound track were out of the question.

In general I prefer the only "music" to be heard on my videos to be the "music" made by the motorcycle that is why audio quality is important from my point of view. I have found that an external microphone gives the best results because you can mount it towards the rear of the bike where it can pick up the exhaust note better and also mount it out of the wind to avoid wind noise. The built-in microphone on the ATC3K does a pretty good job but it does require some protection from wind and is prone to distortion at higher volumes.

There are some very interesting cameras available for on-bike use on this site here:-

The HQR-2 kits look particularly impressive at 720 x 576 res but I'm not even game to do the currency conversion to find out the cost in Aussie dollars.

I think that's excellent footage. In terms of the price / quality combo I'd say that's pretty good. I'm considering one of those cameras myself.

Prop, that's reduced quality you're seeing there, if you right-click on the above videos and select "Watch on youtube" you can see a closer approximation of what the camera is capable of.

Then I'm even more sold. I know you talk down the sound quality, but I think it's pretty reasonable given the tape over the microphone trick. May have to pick one up very soon......

I guess the audio is reasonable considering the price of the camera and all microphones are subject to wind noise in an on-bike application but I was hoping for more than the camera delivered audio wise. If it had an external microphone socket I'd be very happy but I guess that would be hard to pull off on a waterproof camera.

Well I've found what I'd buy if money were no object:-

http://www.x-sportscam.com/cameras/c...ra-system.html

This is a full high definition (1920 x 1080i) system with separate bullet camera and recording unit. Check the video on that page and make sure you double-click the video to watch in full screen. Looks fantastic on my Asus full high def monitor. Pity I'd need a lotto win to be able to own one of these.

I'm far from being an editing expert myself, i think this winter i'll sign up for some classes on the subject. I made a video of the Rocket but the wind noise was so bad i couldn't hear the sound of the Rocket. JMO i think it makes the video a little more entertaining if you can edit in the right sound/ music. Doesn't mean you have to delete one for the other. Here is an example of both the sound of the bike and the added music. The racing video was excellent .
