Me latest toy

Hi All,

I'm pretty happy with the way the Sprint is running. It's become the fair weather commuter of choice. Kind of boring really with nothing to change and all, so... what's a guy to do?

It's a Performance Aerobatics Extra 260. I pretty much followed the suggested recepie. Roll and pitch rates are crazy on high rates. It isn't very fast but does unlimited vertical anywhere above about 1/2 throttle.
48" span.
2.1 lb AUW.
Thrust 30 brushless.
3s 2150 LiPo.

FWIW I finally got the little Millennium 3dx flying as it should this weekend. Sanding the tail control surfaces to airfoil shape and bumping the power to Hyperion HP-Z1709-06 seem to have corrected the balance. It does a pretty good job of disappearing into the clouds.

I think the much larger E260 has a higher roll rate. The 3dx may actually outrun the E260 in level flight.

Beautiful plane! So, do you buzz the Evergreen Museum every now and then? Just to torment the Spruce Goose?

Absolutely.

The McMinnville field is right behind the museum. I fly there at times with my 80 Y.O. dad who lives in the area and also flies. My son and I outfitted him with a new plane and radio last year.

I think I like Barnstormers field on Butteville Rd best. That's where these were taken tonight. I prefer clear skies but this was the best of this weekend.

Extra, Extra!

Nice little aircraft there, CLB, we have a dealership here in saint augustine. Jim Moser brought them here because of his interest in aerobatic aircraft, I think he was the North american distributor of Extra's. I had the pleasure of knowing Jim Moser when he was still alive, he was instrumental in the design of those and one helluva aerobatic pilot. He had a bucker jungmann for a time that I recovered the wings on, it was beautiful....I think the last aircraft he had was a Baby Great Lakes Biplane....another classic, his dad Ernie, was one of the early barnstormers with an airshow that included "The worlds smallest airport" which was a platform mounted on the top of a one ton pickup truck. Ernie would land that J3 cub on it while the truck kept pace with him. The platform had two "notches" or wells where the wheels would lock in when he touched down. Quite a family for sure and one of the earliest pioneers in aviation.
Glad to see you with that Extra, it's gotta be one of the sweetest aerobatic aircraft around.

Raise your hand if you had to resort to Google to decide if that was radio controlled or full-sized!

Nice looking aircraft, CLB!

Nice plane. I kept banging up my Extra on landing so after repairing it multiple times I just scrapped it and put everything in a Mini Ultra Stick. Still has unlimited vertical with the e-flite 450 motor and a 2000 LIPO.

I haven't had a single crack up since getting the Ultra Stick. I guess the Extra was just a bit above my abilities , especially with wind and rough fields. I could fly it and land it, but it would snap out on me on landing unless I kept a lot of power on and really greased it.

With the Ultra Stick I can drop in over a fence and 3 point the landing everytime but I miss the 3D.

I flew again tonight. Friday is Flyday. A regular group gets together after work on Friday afternoons.

I am getting back into the hobby after approx 20 years off. The plane I initially picked up was a Millennium Slow Stick X which is a symmetrical airfoil & tail upgrade for a GWS slow stick. It didn't take long to upgrade the power to 4S 2000 and Park 480 driving a 12x6. Needless to say it goes up when so commanded. Motocalc says the motor should burn up but cooling is excellent and all is fine. I've posted photos here in the past. The plane is still my main flyer and dialed in better than ever.

The Extra is in the same ballpark for light wing loading. The oz/ft^2 figure is slightly higher but the span is wider placing more wing area in low boundary layer flow. The bottom line is that the plane lands very close to zero ground speed. It's the nicest thing I've flown as far as landing and takeoff manners. Aileron and elevator response are bizarre at high rate but the control is still precise with a good amount of exponential dialed in on the transmitter. I'm happy.
