Does any know if anyone has reproduced a copy of the bike used in the Steve McQueen Movie The Great Escape?
From what Little I've read it was a Triumph Trophy . To give it that Period look they consider using a BMW'er but felt the frame was to rigid for the stunts , also they changed the seat and added flat paint and a slotted front light. you can see it on Youtube under Steve McQueen Motorcycle chase.
If all goes well, i'll be getting the 2009 scrambler which i believe is the closest production model so far and i'll have to make a few modifications, nothing too excessive, i'm more than happy with the arrow exhaust and fuel injection switch to play with. I dont like the in your face wing mirrors, they are going and i doubt i'll get new mirrors unless i nearly crash a few times. Low down handlebars are the way forward and some custom progressive shocks maybe, apart from that, there's not much else. I think you are right about it being a Trophy model maybe a TR6 but i dont know what year, i bet someone was keen enough to make a replica maybe a restoration not a BMW engine too though. I only wish manufacturers would go back to making the old bikes all over again, just another pipe dream.
Just a few days ago I read that a company in the UK is producing a limited number of Steve McQueen replica bikes. Sounded like a serious enterprise. Will see if I can locate the article and send you more info.
Nice one McQueen, a good closeup of the handlebars, now i've got to find something similar.. did'nt realise they were painted green though, i think chrome is the best i'll be getting.
What your looking for is a Dutch army 3TA. 350 unit twin. Take off the bags and the markings and hey presto the closest thing to the Great Escape Bike available ready built.
Course the real Great Escape was a British and Commonwealth affair no Americans jumping over fences. But we know you guys like to write yerselves in to History where you can and it was a damn cool scene. So we don't mind
37 speeding tickets! A fleet of German police cars in pursuit each day! He must have had a lot of fun back then. I dont approve of the narrator calling him a nazi though, poor choice of words.
OK Towerguy - here is the link to get Steve McQueen replica bike.
Look at page 10 on the attached link which is the February newsletter of the Portland Rat Pack.
I actually had a picture on my PC of that scene when bike was in mid air. It was really clear and you could see the front end had been modified to make that scene possible. Anyone have it? My PC crashed and I had not backed it up so a copy would be great to get again.
I spent an hour cleaning the bike today for the first time, interesting i have to say, cleaning my Harley was easy,15 minutes and done, the scrambler has lots and lots of awkard little places to get to and my big sponge cannot cope with it. I also fitted the headlight grill but need to remove it again to get it powdercoated black (thanx Roadscum), i found someone to do it 9 miles away, i'll go there tomorrow after my alarm is fitted, then its finding a similar version to McQueens handlebars but im clueless to the size,i tried googling the info but nothing coming up,does anyone know what style/shape/size etc...?
When u gonna post pics of the new khaki? Just saw cdukatz khaki and must admit I am converted. Have always liked most things in khaki to be honest'
Again anyone have the pic where bike is in mid air? Please paste a copy here if do.
