What to do?

I'm looking into selling my bike privately so i can buy a Triumph, what i need is tips on how and where to sell from. Here in the UK there are many scammers and fraudsters theives etc, as everyone knows, i'd rather not be had.
Should i sell from home?
What if the buyer is not the buyer and has a friend who wants to buy?
What if the buyer wants a test ride?
What form of payment is best and most secure?
Is it best to have back up? ie: Big psychotic looking friend?
i like to hear your views please

Sell from home? I would only give email or cell as contact info. Then arrange a place to meet for the sale/test ride (see below on that). There's no sense in announcing to the world "I'm looking to get rid of a bike at the following address."

A friend who wants to buy? I'd say sod off, unless they want to just walk up and hand you the friend's cash. Try to come up with a good reason why you wouldn't handle it yourself if you wanted to buy a bike... that's what I thought.

Test ride? This has been discussed many times. I'd demand cash in hand before the ride. That way they get the ride (which is a reasonable desire, of course; you're just protecting yourself from the sleazebags), and you have total security. Make it clear, in writing or in front of witnesses, that if they so much as scratch it, they've bought it. Finally, go with your gut; make it clear in the discussions of any test rides that you reserve the right to call it off for whatever reason you see fit.

Payment? Cash.

Backup? Yes, good idea. The level of apparent psychosis is negotiable, but it never hurts to have another person there on your side in case they notice something you don't. They can also back you up if you end up in situation where it would otherwise be your word against theirs.

Thanks buddy, some very useful advice there, will keep it in mind, last time i sold a bike, it was a copper i finally sold it to, but it was his mate who got all the details first, i never met the bloke (probably on the force as well) ,he never showed up for the sale,i only realised they knew each other because they both let something slip which linked them both together. Good job i never informed the copper that the factory which produced the model in China had blown up, he might have problems getting spare parts.

It could be good news, a have a potential buyer coming to look this week,at worst next week, going on your advice,i thought about outside a supermarket close to the banks if there are any snags, but i came up with a better idea... rather than call on a friend for back up, i thought i'd make the meeting place the Triumph showroom as i intend to buy one off them the moment i get the cash.. the salesman can overlook things, check the money is real etc.. afterall its in their interests to help me sell and they'll know more about selling than my friend will. The only bummer is that i've got to wait maybe two days or more nevermind nevermind..
