highbeam problem

I did Lake Superior on my Bonneville over the weekend. I had nine hours left to make a 5 hour ride for Iron Butt. Should have been an easy qualifier. At nine o'clock I hit the Michigan line and it gets dark then comes pitch black and pouring rain. If I touch my passing light or high beam the fuse blows and then bike will not start. I ended up in a hotel and rode home the next morning. Now the passing light does not work at all, but the city light will stay on. If you touch high beam the fuse blows and bike will not start. What is this?????

The current from the headlight that comes through fuse 1 is also used to feed the starter solenoid, so if that fuse blows it won't start.

The reason for it blowing must be a short to ground probably inside the headlamp shell, a cable rubbing on a sharp edge, for example.

The fuse which Forchetto refers to is fuse#9, not fuse#1. Check for water in the headlight cutout relay. This is the rightmost (I think) of the 3 relays under the left side panel. The middle relay is the turn signals and the one on the other end is the heavy starter solenoid.

If the headlight cutout relay (also known as 'starter relay', but people often confuse it with the heavy starter solenoid) is shot, it can be replaced very cheaply by any standard sized 5 pin automotive relay, available from any car parts store.
