R/R wiring

Hi all,
Looking to do the R/R mosffet upgrade with its own wiring loom. Plenty of good info and help here.
The only thing I can't find is info on what to do with the remaining loom and connectors.
I'm sure the "usual suspects" will point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Question is are you relocating the R/R when getting a new one or just putting back in the same location?
If you are leaving it at the front of the bike just get the kit that is prewired for the factory connector.
If you are planning to put it somewhere else in the middle of the bike then you have lots of other questions to ask yourself. Do you feel comfortable rewiring the R/R? Ricks sells a universal kit that can be soldered into place with the stator and the battery cables. You could also move your stock connector and rewire it in the new location.
Do you want to keep your carb heaters or not? Do you want to open the can of worms that is the stock wire harness?

I just got finished with a major rewiring / wire diet for my bike. Stripped the whole wire harness and took out all the redundant wiring, moved all the connectors inside the battery box, rectifier under the battery box, binned the clutch and side-stand switch circuits, binned the carb heaters, binned the alarm circuit, shortened all the wires as needed...

If you're at all like me, once you get into the loom and wrap your head around all the oddities and redundant wiring paths you're sense of design will be offended and you will just have to open it up to "fix" it. :grin2:

Hi Zenbike

Well now that you mention it..... :laugh2:

I was going to relocate the new mosfet R/R and use Easternbeaver wiring loom. So that's wired direct to the battery and the generator. I was wondering if all I had to do was seal up the redundant connectors

I hadn't planned on major surgery as I'm only able to do the easy stuff. LOL

Looks like its back to puzzling over the wiring diagram then !

Cheers

Getting into the loom to pull the cabling out seems like a don't do moment, but if you take your time it is quite easy, if you get to a point where it is more trouble than worth then making the ends safe would be sufficient, removing the tank is more tricky than opening up the loom to remove some cabling but it is really down to how confident you feel

I have had the tank of a few times so that's easy enough.

Probably seal the connectors .

So, looking at the wiring diagram it seems I would loose the carb heaters. I would like to keep these although it wouldn't be the end of the world without them. Doesn't look like anything else will be affected though.
Just wondering why the carb heaters run straight of the generator though.

Yep that's a possibility.
I'm just wading through a 55 page post charging system questions.
Hoping to find the answers there.

Ok. So after much searching and reading I have found the answers I was looking for.

Cant work out how to show a link to a thread, but its called Carb Heater re-wire when relocating R/R by DEcosse.

I now know why the carb heater is wired direct to generator, and how to do it

Result.

My post pics if anyone interested.

Yes that's the one. Wish I had found it sooner ! LOL

How do you post the link up like that ?

I have got all the goodies now to start this little project.

You guys who have done this mod and kept the carb heaters - any advice on where you joined the wiring ?

I have found the wiring diagram by DEcosse so understand what to do just not quite sure where to do it.

Its Done !!

Hi all,

Finally sorted this little job, hope its of help or interest.

I have always had charging issues - battery goes flat eventually - and have to put trickle charger on every time I've been for a ride. Checking with multi meter shows barely 12v, 12.5v on a good day !.
All the other items in the charging system proved to be ok following testing procedure outlined by some of you clever people ( DEcosse, Ripper etal). The R/R was ok as well but if I was doing wire mods why not upgrade that as well.
So following advice it was time for new R/R and re-wire.

Ordered R/R - Mosfet FH020, and wiring kit from Eastern Beaver with metri pack sealed connector.

Original plan was to put R/R in existing place, however it is quite big and those connectors are huge. To me it would have looked rubbish.

Now where to put it ?. When I enquired with DEcosse about his keyless ignition, he said that space would be an issue on my Bonnie. He wasn't joking !!. I spent quite some time fiddling, jiggling, twisting and pulling to no avail. It wouldn't fit anywhere. I wasn't going to put it in the original position. Mmmm.
I had fitted a rear fender delete which gave a nice flat and very exposed position to fix to. So I bounced, loaded abused the rear suspension and there was definitely enough room to fit it.
So, how to protect it ?
Bought some Aluminium plate and angle and ....

set to work.

Not bad for me !! Now to fix it to the bike.

Now for the wiring.

Wires crimped ready for connector.
I wanted to keep the carb heaters, so back to the these pages for reference. Mmmmm. Cant seem to find the right wire !! Two cups of Tea and another read of the forum and, aha , wrong end of loom. Dohh !!

All done and buttoned up, and here's the proof for all my efforts !!

Really pleased with that just above tick over.

Some final thoughts:
More effort was needed to see if it would fit first.
The water proof connectors are quite large and was difficult to squeeze in, and as it turned out wasn't necessary.
The kit from Eastern Beaver is excellent. Now I see how it all works I have the confidence to buy the bits and make my own for future projects.
So far the R/R is nicely protected.

Hope you like my efforts

Jon

PS sorry only links to photos, cant seem to paste from google photos

Hi steventhechef.
Yep, take your time and don't rush is definitely the way to go.
Looked at your post - nice work.
I did lots of searching on the site before starting work, and its strange yours didn't come up. I may need to work on that. :nerd:

Cheers

Maybe it is the language difference - English to Australian. :)
