Adapting "vintage" luggage to a Mag Wheel Bonnie
Well I've been condidering hard luggage for my 2015 Bonneville Mag Wheel for some time. Last year I made some custom racks for my soft paniers but Ive always kept an eye out for something else. Most luggage out there falls into 3 categories. Givi space cases, leather tassels, or some sort of aluminum or pelican ADV cases. None of which really match the esthetic of the Bonnie. I was considering something along the lines of pelican cases when I found some "vintage" Hondaline cases from a 1976 Goldwing (GL1000). Now these are before Goldwings came factory equiped with farrings and Luggage and you could get these from Honda for several of thier models.
Now these are rough but were cheap at only $30. There are 3 cases and all the required racks and a removable backrest. Ill be chronicling thier adaptation and restoration here. It will be a slow process and done in stages, Im not sure yet if I will be adapting the trunk or backrest it may just be the panniers. We'll have to see.
First step was mocking up the right rack. I got lucky and the upper mount fit like a glove the bottom needed to be reworked and a temporary rear stableization mount needed to be fabed.
Now one of my nessesary criteria is relatively quick removal of the racks as these may only be mounted for trips. I had previously modified my factory rear rack to provide a rear stableizing mount for my soft bag hoops. So I used these tabs to mount the new racks to, as previously stated Im not sure Im going to adapt the trunk rack.
Ok all mocked up...
Next will be starting the refurb on one of the cases.
