I'm decided to follow up the carb cleaning on my '02 with removing the TPS. I've read the posts here and most results seem to be positive when removing from a carbed bike. Reading that mikeinva did it years ago is enough for me.
Unbolting it from the right side carb starts the process, but then what? Will I find a plug assembly or have to cut wires? Oldgoldie mentions installing a cover over the removal site - something would have to be made to cover it I'm sure.
For those who've removed it, how was the open area covered at the carb?
You don't need to unbolt it, just unplug it, follow the cable up under the seat. Disconnect and the TPS no longer has any effect. Unbolting it from the body is a headache and putting it back is a pain. Leaving it bolted but unplugged means you can try it and easily go back. Unbolting it gets you no additiknal benefit other than the look.
Excellent! Love simple tasks. Perhaps you've done this also? Just this morning read your long post regarding the carb problems you encountered on a used Bonnie. Great post, very helpful for all to read. You obviously have some skills and testing ability but it was a real stick-to-it test I bet.
Thanks yes I've been through some challenges Yes I've tried running without the TPS connected - honestly I couldn't tell the difference.... but give it a go see what you think
Thanks bonza! My connector was for some reason easy, just above the right side cover plate, slightly hidden, out it came. Too windy/rainy for a road test but good news so far. The bike starts the same, but actually kept running well until I finally pushed in the enricher! It had always died twice, three times, while putting on the helmet. So this is great!
I haven't read one regret from someone on a carbed bike that's done this. Still not certain as to 'why' this improves running, but I'll take it.
I disconnected mine, didn't notice any difference and reconnected it. Saw a post about adjusting it on this site. Used my multimeter and checked the readings and it was way out of spec. Fiddled with it and got readings in the proper resistance range and then noticed it ran better. To each his own.
Dang...New information, interesting. Maybe my reading of this has been too casual, but on a carbed bike I thought it was rather like an appendix. I'll run it for awhile 'off' then check on adjusting it back 'on'. Love endless fiddling!
Thanks Coach -
