01 different heads

My 2001 Bonnie Has one of the original heads that were manufactured the
first 5 weeks into production from what I read on another form.
I never noticed it until I read it. From what I read they changed them
to decrease production time on the machining of the heads.
I am not sure of all the differences but the obvious one is the location of
the oil cooler feed fitting at an angle towards the front of the head.
All the other ones the oil cooler feed fitting is coming off the side of the head.
I am wondering what other differences there may be. I remember reading
some were on here that the camshaft drive gear shaft retaining bolt
didn't look like it was in the same spot?
I have a sticker at the bottom part of my gas tank with a date March 14/2001

Note the locations of the oil cooler feed coming off the head.

Actually it's dirty in that pic. I try to keep it clean most of the time.
She has over 21,000 miles on her now. I ride when I can between
3 kids a wife and 2 jobs. I am getting ready to tear into her for the
winter and install the 904 BB kit . I am still debating of the 42mm Mikunis
or the keihin 39 mm FCR's. I'm not sure if I want to screw with the head now

A quick check on google images reveals that the 2001 Red/Silver & Green/Silver models have the angle entry

As mine is A 2002 model produced in 2001 maybe that is when they changed the set up

Also the parts list on bike bandit reveals KIT, CYL HEAD & OIL PIPES ENG NO 134325 AND BELOW

My engine No is 145281

Bill yours is obviously one of the very first Hinckley Bonnies, the number you quote - is that part of your VIN or the actual number stamped on the engine?

If the number is part of your vin the '900' denotes that it is a Bonneville, the 'HN' that it's a 790cc 360degree firing, the next digit being '1' means that it was built at Hinckley or could be a check # the other six digits being your frame number.

Whereas if this your engine number, then I guess the above info still applies?

Question does your frame number match your engine number? i.e. the last six digits - Mine doesn't

Hey Bill,

Glad to see you on here. Hope all is well w/ you. You gave me an idea as a fellow 2001 Bonne owner. Here is my engine# 900HN1130097. (I dont know if this was the 97th bike built??)

I'll post a new thread and see where it goes.

The last 6 on a vin wont have any correlation to the engine #. My last 6 are 129666. (i know 666...)

I believe 2001 was the 1st year for the "new" bonnevilles.

Lets see who responds on the other thread

Hey Dave
I'm always on here it's like a drug I need my fix every day.
When I started this different head thing I thought of you and checked
out the pic of your bike and sure enough you have one of the first heads.
I'm curious about these engines numbers and what they mean.
Keep in touch.
Bill

I would like to know if the last digits in the engine numbers are actually
the number they came off the assembly line?
I don't think they made that many Bonnevilles the first year.
I had mentioned before that I was told by one of the Triumph rep's at my
dealers that they were only going to produce 1200 the first year for 2001?

My bonnie is dated 01/01. Engine #900HN1125758, Frame/VIN #SMT900HN21J125330. I have the original config as bonnevillebilly.

Don't know for sure why they changed?? Possible cheaper oil line fitting?? Maybe easier access??

Something to be aware of when ordering parts.

I wonder if a dealer would have access to an explanation for the change. There would have to be a bulletin explaining the physical change, part number and possibly a price change per unit.

Up dated list. I don't know why I am doing this But it is interesting.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I can’t make heads or tails out of the engine numbers
This is what I did figure out with the help of bikbandit
Engine numbers 134325 and below has the oil feed pipe towards the front
of the head. Engine numbers above will have the oil feed on the side of the head.
Where the actual number off the assembly comes in I have know idea.
Why some have 6 digits and some have 7 digits again I don’t know
Date oil feed who eng. #
3/01 --------front ---------------Me -------------------1131629
9/01 -------side ----------------skyblue ----------------145281

OK throw me in here.
Cdn bought: Engine last seven is-1119853
Date it was made 10/00

Now I took a look at my manual and noticed the Bonneville America schematic shows that it had a side oil entry. Was there a difference between the two?

I have to go get my numbers but my 01 Bonnie was manufactured in 10/00.
It's got 33k on the clock. Im trying to resize pictures to put here but Im having issues working that out.
I believe I have the style of head mentioned here.
As a note, I thought the HN letters in the serial # represented Hinckley, and N is the engine designation?
Ill have to dig out the shop manual.

My bike was dated 02/01. But as I found out its a canadian model. Not sure if my last 4 being 0097 mean it was the 97th bike assembled or if that represents another code.

I'd like to see what the lowest to highest range is and use it as a gauge. I'm wondering if its the last 3 digits. As our list goes from 0097 to 4652 within the 113 prefix.

Inquiring minds....

Bike Bandit lists 4 separate part numbers for Bonneville heads as follows:

KIT, CYL HEAD & OIL PIPES ENG NO 134325 AND BELOW
CYL HEAD, TWIN, MACHINED ENG NO 134326 TO ENG NO 186916
CYL.HEAD,2CYL,MC''D.BLACK ENG NO 186921 TO ENG NO 202150
CYL HEAD, TWIN BLACK ENG NO 202151 AND HIGHER

CYL.HEAD,2CYL,MC''D.BLACK ENG NO 186921 TO ENG NO 202150
CYL HEAD, TWIN BLACK ENG NO 202151 AND HIGHER
That is correct, now take a look at the first num. in the list 134325
Now look at the list I made above. The eng. num's that have the oil feed at
the front of the head are all below 134325.
bonnieblackinf eng. num. 113465 is just over and his bike has the feed on the side.

Now what changes were made to the head after eng. num. 186916 and
them from 18692 to 202150 I'm guessing has to do with some being
finished in black and some finished in the silver?????
And I was wondering what happened the eng. num. between
186916 & 186921 there is 5 eng. numbers missing?????

I have a silver and red Bonnie. Manufactured April 2001 with the following
VIN/Chassis: SMTTJ900TM1125051
Engine # T125477

My heads are the same as bonnevillebilly's-front oil pipe feed
Clutchplate check the date again something don't add up
you have a lower engine number then the ones made earlier.

Actually my TANK DATE is 06/01 and the BUILD DATE is 12/00.
So, all is well, Bonnevillebilly!
(Interesting research you've started, thanks.)
