My bike shuts down while I'm riding

Hi everyone,

I've had my bike for 6 years it's a 2007 Triumph Bonneville T-100 with 27k and it's never given me any real problems other than
the occasional oil leak however for the past 2 weeks the bike has been giving me a lot of grieve. The bike shuts down while I'm riding it doesn't happen quickly but slowly and it doesn't happen everyday but it does happen sporadically. It feels like the bike is running out of gas even though I have a full tank. I give it throttle but the bike doesn't speed up and within a few seconds it starts to struggle and shuts down. And even if it doesn't shutdown it sometimes feels like it wants to. (Electrical system is working during shutdown) When it does shutdown I usually wait a few seconds before rebooting the bike and this helps so I haven't been stranded yet . On a side note the shutdown happens regardless of whether the bike engine is cold or hot. The first time I took it in to the shop my mechanic noticed that there was water in the tank mixed with gasoline so he clean out the tank filled it with gas and that help for 3 days but then the problem started again. Its back in the shop he's going to look at it again tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem.

electrical or fuel?

If it was electrical, the bike would likely shut down suddenly, not gradually. Electrons are either moving to ground or they are not.

Fuel or fuel pressure is more likely. How hot has it been in NYC? Vapor lock? Is your gas tank properly vented?

Fuel or spark?

Mr. nagibe,

As already suggested this issue sounds like fuel starvation. Of course check the easy things first, such as the tank venting. If that turns out not to be the cause, it would be time to look further.

Any bike that is 8 years old should have the fuel system gone thru from filler neck to floats even if it's running fine. The petcock filters could easily be partially clogged, and or the inline filter, that lives in the fuel line plastic Tee.

If you are not going to do the work yourself, at least give direction to the "mechanic" to clean the fuel system out completely. That should rule in or out, the fuel system as the source of your issue.

Namaste,
Charles

That's very interesting, it sounds like condensation in the tank. I'm not suggesting that's the problem, by the way. It does sound like fuel starvation, however we have seen a few cases on here where the pickup coil has been on its way out and caused roughly the same symptoms. You could also check out the famous igniter/seat problem. Just a couple of thoughts to throw in the hat.
