Keyless

Here's one I haven't read about on this forum. Since my new car is keyless ( and that is the most awesome thing ever ) I was thinking about converting my Bonnie to it. There are a few companies I found on line that can hook it up. I abhor where the ignition is right now and want to move it to the right side somewhere, but then thought why not get rid of the need for it altogether? Has anyone done this and if so please post some feedback. Thank you for any ideas.

Just to be clear I'm talking about an RFID system.

That's the one I've been checking out this morning. Looks like it will be a winner. Right now it's $229 too. Very tempting. But I wanna get the Breathe and tune #3 first. Just waiting on a check that's supposed to be in the mail today Pieman....

I just recently read... somewere... That thieves are using RF signal booters to boost the signal from your keys (say in your house) that could (depending on inbedded car or bike security coding) allow them to start vehicle and make off with it. It will not restart after it is turned off without the key after that. But by that time it is now at a chopshop being parted out.

My Hyundai Veloster turbo is keyless and it's not possible to start the car unless the key is physically inside the car. This is primarily to stop people unlocking the door and stealing the car when I am within proximity, such as at a petrol station. I believe that most if not all keyless systems have this feature, or at least they do in Europe and South Korea.

Such a security function would not necessarily be possible with keyless motorcycles.

interesting thread. My cell phone (Blackberry) has RFID/NFC which I use at certain coffee shop pay terminals here in Canada.
Could be interesting to start the bike with the phone....

The guard dawg system's fob goes into sleep mode after 3 mins I believe. They said that even if you are on your bike and the fob has been motionless your bike won't start. You gotta jiggle it so it can transmit the code. And even then the transmit range is very short. Someone would REALLY need some detailed info about the owner to pull it all off. Or they could go steal something else. I hope. Wonder if the car fob does the sleep mode thing. Gonna check into it.

It most probably does, to conserve battery power. Unless the RFID works on the 125kHz system where the fob does not require a battery. The range of those (such as the M-Lock) is only 2 inches.

Or you can use the start of the art technology that I had on my Harley (with Magnito). I spliced in two toggle switches (hidden in different locations, leading to the kill switch (wcick I inverted the wires onl for the overall electronics. Key would have to in/on and OEM Bar mounted Kill switch OFF and then two remotes also on.

So even if you had the key and bar kill switch RUN the bike wouldn't start. You would have to turn the bar mount to the OFF position and find both remote toggles and get them in the right configuration. :)

I can say that the Dawg is a good system. Invariabily you get on your bike, set the engine kill switch to RUN, start your engine and go, but sometimes you will need to tap your pocket to wake the fob. When at your destination, you pull up, set the kill switch to kill and walk off.

It's been dead reliable, the fob battery lasted four years and I never forget my keys.

I really like using a key! I like the whole ritual of firing up the bike, even on the very rare occasion when I get my gloves on before I realise I have not got my keys out. There is just something sublime about the whole process, I include putting on my kit, helmet and all. I think the ritual of it puts you in the right frame of mind for riding. A little bit like meditation or a mindfulness exercise. I really miss kick starts too.
and I am sure there are those who would say it aint a real retro without a key:D

Sitting here thinking about this. Being Old :geezer and electrically (but not mechanically) challenged I can see this technology being GREAT security features in the next decade when all bikes have it.

NOT for the new bikes for the OLD bikes!!

You know (if you were around).... walk up to bike, insert key, tickle carbs, prime engine with dry kick and to bring piston to TDC, possibly advance ignition, turn on key, switch to run, kick start engine.

The above sequence will be a lost art making the bike unstartable to "modern thieves" looking to hoist RFI/Electronic Security Bikes! :D :applause

Could I ask DEcosse (another Ken?) a question that concerns something he wrote in another thread.

If a bike uses a key tag immobiliser, such as the new Thruxton R or Honda's HISS which reads the tag in the key to disarm the immobiliser, does that eliminate the possibility of adding any keyless system?

I suspect it does, but was interested to get DEcosse's confirmation, either way.
