Thruxton front fender bracket mod. Help.

So, I've got a 2011/2012 Thrux that I've modded into a Scrambler. I recently fitted a new pair of shoes (Heidenau K60 Scouts, 120 front/140 rear) and the front tire is a little to close for comfort to the front fender bolts, so I am currently running fenderless/bracketless up front - which I like the look, but it is a real problem on forest service and fire roads, or when it rains. I figured I would mod an aftermarket fork brace as a fender bracket since the clearance on the braces is just about right, as they normally fit over the stock front fender. I was looking at the BC bracket and noticed it mentioned it would not fit a Scrambler with the fender on - so is the bracket "taller" (so to speak) on the Scrambler, or is the bracket the same and the difference in the fork lowers? Could I use a Scrambler bracket, or does anyone have in mod suggestions?

Thanks
Paul

I was doing the opposite (lowering my fender on my thrux) and just made my own brackets. I made two separate ones. Not that hard really, just use the OE one as a template and make yours a little longer on the ends where they bolt to the tubes.... I used 1/16" stainless....

Do you happen to have any pics of the brackets you made? Just installed a 110/80/18 front with a set of wide wheels, and whilst the increased gap (around 0.5 inches) isn't as much as switching to a 17, it's bothering me!

Paul,

A Norman Hyde fork brace would be the ideal solution for you. The underside of the brace is drilled and tapped so you can mount your fender (without the stock bracket) directly to the brace.

Another idea is to switch to buttonhead fasteners to mount the stock fender bracket. Your tire will still contact them under hard cornering, but at least it's a smooth rounded surface the rubber is rubbing against.

Hey, I am curious what you ended up doing to get the fender to fit. I am in the process of scramblerizing my Thruxton and wanted to get those same tires in those same sizes. Any issues (besides the front fender) with running the 140 rear/120 front?

Yea I definitely wouldn’t run it without a brace. I took a look at the Norman Hyde brace that was mentioned in this thread but $270 is a bit rich for my blood. If that’s the best solution I may have to put it off for a while.

Aha, of course, hadn't thought of a fender brace taking over the 'structural' duties. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

Must admit as she's sitting in the garage without fender, I'm actually coming around to the fenderless 'look'.. and the black 'tom bros' fender mount/brace is quite pretty... I don't really do any riding in the rain (unless occasionally caught out), so may try riding without it.

Options!

Yeah, I did a fair bit of researching ahead of the change, and was expecting (hoping) not to see any increased gap, but it's definitely noticeable with Dunlop roadsmart 2s.

Not sure if these images will post (haven't tried from mobile site before) but here goes...

How do you like the Roadsmarts? I will be mounting a set next week to replace Activs.
tbh aside from a freezing ride back in the dark from the shop on Saturday Night, I've only had a chance to put 5-6 miles on 'em - and also on really cold tarmac, so I'm not really qualified to give an opinion of any value. The bike certainly already feels a lot more planted than it did with the skinny rear wheel & factory Metzlers, but probably not a lot of insight there. Looking forward to scrubbing them in & actually finding out!
