Oil Puddle on the Garage Floor - Any Ideas???

Went to the garage to get on the bike this morning and saw that all my oil had drained out onto the floor. It looks like it's coming from the gear selector lever (see pics). Didn't have time to open it up. Any ideas?

Looks as if the seal is slipping out from its housing. Try and push it back in with a couple of flat screwdrivers with wide blades.

If it doesn't move, remove gear lever and use a suitable piece of tubing to press it back in.

The tubing has to be able to slip over the diameter of the shaft and fit the rubber part of the seal. The shaft is about 12mm in diameter so a 13 or 14mm socket or tube wrench might do it.

Its the oil seal in the clutch cover. Easy to replace, remove the cover and just push the old one out then drive the new one in. A carefully chosen socket and light hammer is ideal to tap it out. They are not very tight in there anyway. The seal is made of metal which is covered in rubber, just be careful not to damage the rubber during replacement.

Thanks Forchetto and Ripper. This is super helpful.

Hope this isn't too dumb a question but the oil-seal is a dealer bought item, right? A quick scan of newbonneville.com didn't turn anything up. Where do you guys go to for parts? I don't love the dealer in my town.

You might not need to change it, just push it back inside the cover casting and see if it continues to leak.

The seal is item part number 3600008T0301 and it's used on lots of Triumphs, costing about $10. The likes of Bike Bandit will have some, it's item 5 on this parts list:

The chances are that it'll be a standard size item in which case taking it to a bearing supplier will probably get you a much cheaper alternative off the shelf.

dont need to take cover off the engine to change this seal ..but try to push it back in as Forchetto says

So had a chance yesterday to do as advised and it was really easy. So easy, in fact it worries me. How did this little seal get pushed out? What's going to keep it from happening again ESP while I'm riding? I could seize the engine or worse catch some oil while cornering. Should be so easy to slide in/out?

Good to know you've fixed it.

Triumph also use those special self-extracting seals under the clutch operating lever in the same engine case, the shaft where the clutch cable terminates, we've had quite a few of them also try to escape... Here's a typical thread about it:

On other Triumphs the seal is kept in by a thrust washer and circlip, like on this Speed Triple for instance, it uses the same seal as the Bonnie's :
