It's friggen amazing how much dirt my oiled filters pick up when I wash them out. I'm glad that's not going into my engine. Of course, I don't know how much of that an un-oiled filter would pick up.
It does sound like your over oiling for sure though. Oil doesn't need to be showing up on the inside of the filter. Sounds like I use more than beemerrich, but I give it a solid outer coating and rub it into the filter a bit and compress/uncompress the foam a few times. The goal in my mind is to coat the inner surface of those voids in the foam (on the outer edges of the filter at least) while still allowing plenty of air flow. But I want some oil in there to trap the dust and fine dirt so it doesn't eventually work through the foam and enter the engine.
I bet you could run these engines with just a screen over the carbs instead of a filter at all for quite a while without issue. But it's like using decent oil, replacing your brake fluid once in a while, adjusting valve clearances, etc. The bike will run without issue without doing those things for many, many miles, but I want mine to run forever without issues
