Hi All,
I recently purchased my 3rd Hinckley Triumph(Sprint RS/Tiger 1050 previously) - a new 900 Scrambler! I love it. Yes, it's slow, yes it handles questionably, but it's a ton of fun to ride and looks terrific. I'm looking for opinions on the following upgrades:
1. Flyscreen- I see about 4 or 5 different screens on twistedthrottle.com. They all look more functional than the Triumph accessories. Any recommendations here?
1. I got the Dart. I just wanted something that sent the air over my shoulders so when I am required to get on the freeway, I don't feel like I am holding on for dear life. This allows me to pay more attention to the other things out there trying to kill me; cars, deer, etc.
2. I got the Arrow 2 into 1 and just love it, I didn't take panniers into the equation as I can travel very light. The Arrow looks and sounds awesome to me. I was out on the road this Sunday and ran into an older guy on a Ducati Monster who made specific mention of the pipe. It felt like high praise to me.
3. Don't know, have too many things in the pipeline to do before considering that one.
4. I didn't do it right, I have done mostly cosmetic changes so far. I have ordered shocks and springs though, and I'd hazard a guess that most around here would tell you and I to do those first. Tires will be next up for me after that.
Mind posting a link to the specific rack you're getting?
The Dart isn't perfect. The wind around my helmet is there but I don't think about it very often. I wear a good Shoei helmet which seems to cut through the wind very well. Pretty much talking about speeds of 65+ here.
1. Flyscreen- My '08 came with a DART. I guess it works fine. I like that it keeps bugs off of my "dash" more than anything else. I wear a Shoei RF1000that is pretty quiet. I am considering an AFX "dual sport" helmet and I have no idea if this will change my opinion of the DART.
2. I have the Arrow 2-1 and I like it very much. It is very quiet with the baffle in. In fact, I am having a small issue hearing it at all at speed. I may need to mod the baffle a little. I do not like it without the baffle as it is too loud for me. I use a tailbag for my little bit of luggage and the bike came with a Renntec rack. If I need more space, I will run a saddle on the left side and a box on the Renntec.
3. Steering damper- I have not noticed a need for this on my bike, even with the Moose bars and no bar-end weights.
4. I swapped the shifter with a folding one as I have read many reports of these breaking on even the most gentle laydowns. I also had the fork oil changed to 7.5 and filled to 140mm. This is commonly called the "Tiger Mod" as a forum poster with that name did all the R&D on it. I also plan to swap the rear springs/shocks to one of the many aftermarket shocks that are in the 500 clams range. I have Distanzia's on the bike and i like them for my riding which sees very little offroad. For performance, I would think that exhaust and jets (or remap in your case) are the best bang for the buck.
1. Dart - as other have said it does the business.
2. Arrow 2-1 with modded baffle sounds nice/looks good and goes better!
3. Tyres - Avons Distanzia or Metz Tourance. I have the latter and they transform the bike. PERIOD.
4. Suspension. Changed my front springs to Ikon progressives (original oil) and rear for adjustable Ikons.
First, better tires. I run Metzeler Tourances, but anything is better than stock deathwings.
Next, rear shocks. Again, anythings better than the stockers. I run Ohlins 36PLs, but unless you're a fatty, you won't need those. Buy something rebuildable though.
Third, sort out the front forks with progressively wound springs, emulators, whatever...
D. better brake pads, EBC HH sintered pads make a difference.
5. If you ride more than 30 minutes at a clip - gel seat.
If you square those issues away, you'll have a comfortable bike that's safe and enjoyable, then farkle the crap out of it.
All- I very much appreciate the feedback and advice. This bike is a blast and has tons of character! I'll post some pics as the mods happen. Lots to farkle.
Here's one more question for you Scrambler vets- What is the correct idle speed? Man, this is one quiet engine. Mine pops to life(in very hot Austin, TX) at about 600 RPMs, then sits at about 900 until it's properly warmed up. Then is idles at about 1000 RPM when fully warm.
I just had the throttle bodies synch'd at the 500 mile service and they "re-tuned" it. It has the feeling when I push the starter that it will hesitate to start, but always fires up. Just seems like a weak initial RPM. I dunno, maybe I'm just OCD about it...
Mine also seems to idle low but I do not have a tach. If I sit at a light for awhile and it is hot outside, I can feel it drop even more. It always scares me but it has never stalled (now I am doomed!). It starts easily when cold but I am finding it a tough start when it has been switched off after running awhile. So far, so good though. The tough hot-start showed up after the dealer tuned and sync'd the carbs too.
