Triumph Roadster Windscreen Review

I got a roadster windscreen to make riding a little more comfortable at highway speeds, and to use in the winter to stay a little warmer. But I didn't want to wait for winter, so I put the screen on this weekend to take it for a test ride. The verdict: I think the windscreen can wait until winter.

The windscreen ended up giving me a headache. I'm 5'10" and the windscreen relieved my torso from the usual buffeting, but above 50 mph the buffeting was ringing my helmet like a bell. I thought if there was buffeting, it might be low frequency, but instead it was high frequency. I have a good fitting helmet, but with the buffeting, my head felt like a clapper inside a bell. :arghh

Google "Laminar lip" and something like "windshield turbulence" or "Windscreen turbulence". This technique is meant to stop the buffeting caused by turbulence created by windscreens.

There are some comercial sites with ready-made solutions for existing fairings and screens, but there's also some DIY sites detailing the theory behind it.

Basically it consists of an aditional small piece of transparent material fixed to the existing windscreen and separated from it with a certain gap between them. The angle is also critical.

The idea is that air rushes into the gap and travels up between the two pieces of material at high velocity pushing up the airflow over your head.

Lower Deflectors Needed

I think you need lower deflectors. I put them on both our Speedmasters and they are superb in calming airflow. I mounted them on the lower forks using a mount from Memphis Shades, and cut the deflector out of Lexan. They work VERY well.

Let me know if you need more information.

YES, would like info on something that might work on the standard Bonneville. I think the air coming over and around that gas tank is a major player. I just don't know how to correct it. There is very little that things can be mounted to.

laminar lip

I also have the roadster windshield on my t 100...not happy from pounding wind at top of helmet (full face). Any one had experience with aftermarket windscreens..the laminar might work but a bit pricey if it doesnt..seems aftermarket windscreen are about the same price..

My experience with the Roadster screen was the same. It came with my bike, I took one long day ride with it and it came off! I have to wonder if anyone from Triumph actually rode with this noise and shake maker before offering it for sale.

I now use a National Cycle flyscreen and like its looks better and it works well for me. Keeps te big blast off te chest, gives me air flow for my helmet (still air makes my nose stuffy) and virtually no turbulance.

Good luck,

Aftermarket solution

I had the same problem with the roadster screen on my America so I scoured the web and found an aftermarket product from Clearview in Colorado. It's made to fit my stock Triumph mounting system, so I didn't have to buy the mounts, just the plastic. It comes in several configurations including the laminar flow discussed earlier and great customer service too! I ordered the one that looks just like stock but is 2 inches higher and 2 inches wider. It reduced but didn't eliminate the problem so I called them about it. They offered to rework the screen into the laminar flow config. for free. Didn't take them up on it though because I didn't like the look and was concerned about distortion, but it's enough better that I can live with it.

If your head is being buffeted around at only 50mph. Sounds like your head is directly in the flow path of the fairing. You could always raise or lower your riding position or the fairing.

I went for I ride last knight after it cooled down and messed around with ride position behind the emgo fairing. I can tuck in behind it or sit up right either way my head doesn't get buffeted up to about 70mph in the up right position. If I put my head position inline with the fairing lip its like being blasted with a leaf blower.

Columbo:
Search the forum for "lower deflectors"

You'll see a few threads from me there. Others have also chimed in and you should see their info as well.

Give that a look and if you need anything else, you can PM me.

Thanks. At least it gives me something to think about for my mag wheel Bonnie.
