New to the twins forum

Been a lurker on this site for awhile now having a close brush with owning a Triumph on two different occasions (Tiger /Explorer) that weren't right for me.

But now my sights are set on a Bonnie. Actually started when the New Bonnevilles first came out, what a cool machine that took me back to a simpler time. Over the years other projects have kept me dumping money in other bikes so this idea has always been on the back burner. Until a few months ago, a friend let me take out his uncorked scrambler and I realized these weren't just retro eye candy but a lot of fun to ride. Now I want one for real. Somehow it went from "if I find a steal on a used one set up like I want", to "I'll pay a fair price" to contemplating buying a new one.

So I don't own one YET, but I have a pretty good idea of what I want and I'll be asking some questions around here to figure out the rest

new from Germany

Hi there,

first in the welcome center, now here. The recommondation for this forum came from the german thruxton-forum.
My name is DéDé wich is the short french version for André. (salut mes amis francais) I have some roots there and this is my favourite country for riding in Europe.
Since 1985 I´m riding Harleys, in 1981 I had already a Triumph Bonneville.
This year I bought a used 790 carburetor Bonnie and I already worked a little bit on it to get my personal style on this bike.
I´m trying to do all mechanical stuff myself and I appreciate technical conversation and advice. (jetting achievement in progress)
I usually ride Harleys, I have those bikes for a long time and I have riding experience also in the USA(Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California etc.)
Harley riders mentality is changing a lot the last years, this is one of the reasons I went back to Triumph, but shure I´ll keep my Harleys (Street Bob and Sportster)
Beside riding classik bikes I´m playing guitar and do a lot of stuff concerning radio controlled Helicopters an large scale cars
This is my youtube channel, where you can see my Bonneville and a lot other bikes.

Salut DéDé et bienvenue d'un 'Rosbif' en France.

I'm in the Limousin for 10yrs now and love riding my T100 along all the quiet roads around me.

I hope you find this an interesting and useful site.

hi there

well i had a tiger 885 for over 10 years and loved her,she clocked up over 67,000 miles, but she has gone now and i have bought myself a speedmaster 865 on a 2006 plate, big change,so i am here to say hello and hopefully get some info on all things triumph twin.

things like should it make a big clunk when going into first gear ?,and are all gear changes noisey.
also i have a lot of play in the drive ,if i put it in first gear and try to turn the rear wheel,it will move quite a long way before stopping,is this normal ?

i hope to post as much as i did in the tiger forum
i enjoyed the banter and info on there.

cheers
chris

Hi Chris, here are my answers to your questions:

1. Yes, quite normal for a mechanical clunk going into 1st especially if the tickover is high, ie above 1000rpm

2. No the others shouldn't be noisy;

3. I would be checking the cush drive in the rear wheel for wear. Also check the front sprocket for excessive movement on the shaft.

How many miles has the 'new' bike done?

hi big lad, thanks for the reply, the front sprocket is tight on the shaft ( it wasnt before i put a 19 tooth one on ),but it will turn a long way before stopping when its in first gear,i had changed the oil and filter for mobil1 15/50 which is what i had in the tiger, but i wasnt happy with the starting and such,so i have just changed to motul 10/40 semi synth with a new filter and an engine flush, and she starts much better also slackened the chain a bit to 30mm of play.
the clunk is still there in first but if i roll the bike slightly it just clicks into gear,i will try her tonight on the road and see what the results are and let you know.
the cush rubbers feel fine,i checked them first.
cheers
chris

p.s the milage is 13,000

Hi everyone
I can't believe that after riding for over 40 years I have bought my first Triumph.

This will be my fun bike
Looking forward to learning from the forum rats
