I'm looking to tone down the chrome bits on my Scrambler.
I've been looking at the scotchbrite method to give more of a muted/less shine, especially on the exhaust.
Between the plastic and metal bits, it going to be a big project that I may or may not attempt.
Has anybody done this? If so, please share your experience..
I did this to the horrid plastic lighting and directionals on mine (until I just removed the entire horrid rear fender) Sanded the pieces a bit and flat blacked rattle can painted them. The front signals are still on the bike and holding up fine. One thing I love about the new Trumpets is they got rid of a lt f the fake chrome garbage.
I have a thread about doing it on here but the search function really is terrible.
This is great!!!
Is that ring around your speedo plastic or metal?
I'm thinking the plastic parts won't have the same effect if I use a scotchbrite. Better to scuff and paint???
In case you're interested, there is a lot of scotch bright wheels, disks, belts etc. available through any number of metal supply and finish suppliers. Using these if you have the tools leads to much faster and uniform results.
FYI...I discovered that Autosol polish makes quick work on fake chrome painted plastics one day when trying to spruce up my Steve McQueen edition bonneville. On the handlebar hold down plate, there were snazzy little "chrome" caps on the four socket head bolts. The Autosol took that off like a hot knife through butter....Not what I was trying to do! But, the remaining black plastic caps look ok by me!
I guess you could use this stuff to strip off the chrome on the lighting fixtures as well! Bonus is it will not scuff up the plastic like a scotch pad will.

You inspired me to give it a try on my old gas cap. I had replaced it with a black pop up so I have a spare.
One of the reasons I replaced it was because it was big and bright. The other reason was I placed it upside down on a fuel pump while filling up. Moved it just slightly on the pump surface and it scratched the chrome! I've never experienced such soft chrome plating.
Turned out great as it looks just like yours. I used grey scotchbrite at first but it was to fine. Ended up using red or maroon if you prefer.
Thank you
