while doing my winter service on my 2010 bonnie se,on checking the valves 2 of the exhaust valves were out, so I removed the camshaft to reshim the valves .but clumsy prat that I am ,idropped one of the small locating dowels into the engine ,ive removed the sump plate but still cant find it ,ive had a spring with a magnet attached ,poked about through every nook and cranny .all to no avail, looks like its an engine strip job.is it possiple to remove the lower crankcase only, without removing the barrels pistons etc.any advice will be very welcome
Have a look at my post 6 on this thread, it contains further links to dropped items and you might get some tips from folk that managed to retrieve stuff:
Blue skying here, but I wonder if the magnets in the alternator are strong enough to hold a steel object up against the adjacent crankcase preventing it from falling into the sump? Possibly removing the alternator cover will help.
I dropped a M6 locknut into the oil fill hole once. Fortunately it was SS and fell into the sump which as easy enough to retrieve.
I'll leave you with two words of advice: Stroker Kit. :wink2:
Not to hijack, but stroker kit, over big bore kit? Or do you mean as long as the bottom end needs to come apart?
Mine doesn't actually NEED anything, but I've been thinking a 904 kit would be nice.
I was also wondering about the magnets, and if simply bouncing it would shake the dowel down? The problem being that tiny parts don't have the mass to shake loose.
thanks but nothings worked, can any one tell me wether I can split the crankcases without stripping the head barrels etc.ie just remove the bottom crankcase.
I've never done it, but have seen photos of the engine taken with the bottom crankcase removed so it's feasible, remember that some of the holding bolts are loosened from the top case though, I think. Here's such a photo:
Shop manuals are very helpful, but I don't think that it is feasible due the cam chain and the piston being connected to the rods. You may want to get one of those inspection scopes and look into the bottom case after the sump and strainer have been removed.
thanks for the photo ican see why I havnt been successful getting it out It must be in the bottom cam sprocket area it seems to be a separate compartment, looks like a long job
A bit of a lucky coincidence. Member Duckman has just posted a new thread about rebuilding his transmission and shows in a series of photos that the engine can be split without removing cylinders/head, etc, have a look:
Before I would go to the extreme of splitting the cases....if a magnetic pick up tool or magnetized screwdriver can't find it... try taking a length of 1/4 " hose adapted to a a shop vac...down the valley you dropped in and hunt around with the hose....I have pulled all kinds of "o $hit" nuts...screws and jewelry out of places that would normally require surgery....
Does that valley go all the way down to the crankcase w/o a bunch of obstruction? Have you tried just draining the oil? Maybe a magnet in the drain hole?
tried all apart from vacuum too many obstructions, nearly got the engine out ,bit like the guzzi take the frame away seems to be the easiest option, gonna turn engine upside and shake it.thanks for advice ,will post when solved.
just like to thank you all for the advice, ive finally got the little ba%^^rd out .turned the engine upside down and slowly turned the engine over and it fell out.now just to put it all back together.
cheers chaps
