New Rectifier

While at my local Triumph dealer on Monday; they noticed that when I revved my engine up a bit, the headlight grew dimmer.

They checked things out for free; and advised that the rectifier was going out.

I ordered a new one (aftermarket; the Triumph one was $400.00 US).

It came in today, and was installed this afternoon.

I'm glad that they noticed/checked out the problem; as I'd sure hate to get stranded somewhere.

I've been using the Bonne quite a bit since I got it; close to 2000 miles since I bought it, with 1000 being in the last month.

I'm curious how one knows the rectifier is dying. I am also curious how long they typically last.

Mine has gone bad as well. It's 4 years old. I'm going to get mine through Bike Bandit. I believe they are roughly $103 to replace. Fairly easy to do as well, you just have to get into the headlight bucket. I've been keeping my batt on a trickle charge til I purchase the new rectifier.

On these bikes with the stock RR, the headlight dimming when revving slightly off idle is actually normal. Your original RR may have been fine, but as long as the new one is a MOSFET type, at least you'll have improved the charging system even if it wasn't faulty to begin with. I hope they didn't charge you too much for fitting!

Mine went bad a few years ago. The symptom is the battery was not charging sufficiently - there are planty of threads on the fault finding. I went with after market and mounted it on the battery tray to clean up the front end.

FCR, Uni, 813 cams, Works shocks, drilled Ricor valves, Pieman ignitor, green springs, Beringer caliper, preds, damper, brace, Corbin, custom tinware, JMC swingarm, Brembo radial M/C, oil cooler, rearsets, clip ons, tubeless rims, Acewell, T/Clamp

I did this (post #6) R/R mod and it worked out better than I ever expected...

later on (in that same thread) I ended up moving the R/R location... it's all good.

Mine died when the Bonneville was nearly five years old and had 69,00 miles on the clock. I decided to change the original battery as a preventive to avoid a roadside failure and in so doing may have caused the rectum-fryer to die. I noticed a slight hesitation starting for a couple of days (which I brilliantly ignored) and while stopped at the side of the road to put on waterproofs during my commute the bike declined to start. Just like that. Bumping did not start the bike but I had no slope to help me.
I will replace this aftermarket rectifier in another four years as its cheap and easy and they do seem to die.

This was also my experience. It was taking the Battery Tender too long, 3+ hours, to top up the battery.

I decided to be pro-active and replaced it with this, which is the same one that Bella Corse sells:


It's plug-and-play, smaller and blacker than the original, so it looks a bit better in the original location.

2005 Bonneville Blue 790cc, AI removed, Staintunes RC, no snorkel, inlet enlarged, 118/40/NBZT "Thruxton" needles/1 shim/3 turns, Ikon 7610s, Ricor Intiminators, Michelin Pilot Activs, D9 gauge panel, tachometer.
