Yes. Back in the good old days, before check engine lights and low fuel lights, bikes had carbs. People had to use the odometer to keep track of how far they've gone to know when they needed to top off. The reserve petcock allowed for a safety margin for those who weren't tracking their odometer. When they ran out of gas, they could flip the petcock and get another gallon out of the tank. Of course, too often it wasn't flipped back on re-filling, and next time around when you ran out of gas you were plain out of luck.
This is a story that will be told to children of the future when referencing how life used to be.
For the sake of adding to the knowledge base - '06 Scrambler - had to switch to reserve after 96 miles of city riding.
For the sake of entertainment - I don't remember how many gallons it took when I filled up. This is because I was frickin glad to be alive after pushing the bike down the shoulder of I-83 in Baltimore City, up the exit ramp, and down the street to the gas station at 11pm because the bike wouldn't run off the reserve. Still need to figure that one out, but it sounds like I'm not the only one with this problem. Why did I let it go that far? Because I'd just gotten the bike and I was curious.
