I was reading over the various threads on the Burton DS003 seat and read that Burton has a gel insert upgrade for an additional cost. Has anyone ordered a seat with this and is it worth the additional charge? I understand this seat is more comfortable without the gel insert than my stock "plank" seat." It really is like sitting on stacked 2X10's. I am waiting on a response from Danny regarding having the "Triumph" branding painted in silver rather than gold...I'm not into the gold branding. Hopefully I can get some feedback regarding the gel insert before I place my order...thanks in advance.
I don't know about the gel insert, but I just got myself a "standard" DS003 for Xmas. I have only gotten one short ride in so far, but first impressions is it is way more comfortable than the stock seat.
Our rain here hopefully will stop tonight, and I have a few days off over New Years so I plan on getting in rides on each of the next 3 days or so.
BTW, Burton and Danny were amazing to deal with, and shipped the seat right away - I ordered the seat on 12/20 and had it in my hands in Calif on 12/23!
I will post a few photos maybe tomorrow afternoon after I sneak out of the office for a ride!
Sounds good....yes, Danny has been very timely with his email responses. I know they are shut down until after the New Year. I'm hoping to get my questions answered soon so I can place my order when they return from their holiday break.
Bob, have you tried talking to Dan Ballard at Bitchn Stitchn in Lakewood ?
He builds custom seats or rebuilds your seat to fit your ass with or without gel foam. Does great work at reasonable prices.
I received my saddle just before Christmas. No gel added, but it still feels much more comfortable than the standard one.
It also adds an inch or so to the "footrest to top of the saddle distance". I ride a Bonneville SE, which is very low, so this comment may not apply to you. The small legroom, in my case, felt painful.
The silver print is an option. I realized there is some "gold" on the rest of the bike (hairline on the tank, logo on side covers) and decided it did not make sense to spend the extra money, nor wait the extra three weeks. I am very finicky when it comes to details.
The seat looks beautiful. The metal trim at the bottom adds "light" in an otherwise dark spot of the bike.
Service is spotless.
Only drawback: I had to pull the steel hooks that hold the center of the seat in place from the stock seat. It will prevent you from selling it.
I placed my order with Danny at Burton on Friday...I did order with the "Triumph" brand in silver as I have no gold on my Jet Black T100. The side covers have Bonneville T100 on them in silver so I felt for me it was the correct choice. Having an additional 1 inch of seat height will be fine with me although I am not unhappy with how the stock seats sits. You made comment about removing the "steel hooks" in regard to which seat the stock one? I was under the impression the new Burton would just go on as a replacement to the stock seat...it sounds like the Burton needs this part from the stock seat to attach properly? Please clarify if you would...Thanks
You need to take the steel hooks from the stock seat and bolt them on the new one. Not much work. As I mentioned, the only inconvenience is that you will not be able to sell your used stock seat (or you'll need to sell it incomplete).
You'll be very happy with it
Actually there is one more thing. There is no space for the bike documents under the Burton's. I ended up keeping all of them in an internal pocket of the jacket. The way I look at this, is that they spared me the 30 odd bucks I would have spent on knurled hidden screws to make the seat easy to remove. I don't have a use for those anymore.
I wasn't aware that the Burton doesn't use the 2 bolts to hold the seat on if I'm understanding you correctly. Currently I am using the BC quick release screws. I was also going to use the bracket from newbonneville at that location to relocate my directionals when I put on my saddlebags...Hmmmmmmmmm.....How does the Burton seat attach if it is not held in place by those 2 rear bolts? This presents a new issue for me....Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Hold it!
It is held in place by the two bolts at the back of the seat!
I never replaced them on my bike though. I have been carrying a pipe key just in case I needed to pull the docs from under the seat. Now that the very little space is gone, I don't need to carry the key anymore.
Okay...all is good them. Whewwwww.... I keep my doc's under the rubber strap that goes over the battery. I assume it will still fit...Thanks for the clarification regarding the rear bolts and I assume I can still use the BC quick release...
Is it expensive to come to Colorado to ski? I keep telling my family and friends we should move away from the Alps to test new stuff. Is it easy to rent gear?
Skiing is more expensive at places like Vail and Aspen for sure. They get premium dollars for lift tickets and lodging...why? Because they have the name Vail and Aspen.. However, when you come to any of the mountain resorts, your lift tickets are always packaged in with your lodging. Most of the ski areas here have booking agents in Europe, and most parts of South America. If you want any specific information regarding a particular ski area here, send me a PM...I have skied them all back when my son was competing in alpine ski racing. There are some really nice mountains in the state that don't have the name Vail or Aspen that offer some fantastic skiing...Oh...and renting equipment is easy at any of the resorts.
68,
do you feel like the seat lifted you up a bit? Maybe 1" to 1-1/2" that have some claimed? Also how do you like your seat after having it a few months? Oh and one more thing. Were you able to get the "Triumph" text in the back in silver instead of gold? That's one thing I would definitely want too.
Yes Harry, the Burton seat does add an 1" or so in height from the stock seat. I am very happy with the Burton...an improvement over the stock seat with regard to comfort and appearance. Burton will paint the "Triumph" brand in silver although there is an upcharge. Contact Danny at Burton via email...he was very responsive to my questions and easy to work with.
I took delivery of one a few weeks ago, went for gold motif as I have the Transfer tank badges, although very comfortable I must say I was dissapointed with the finish, the screws that hold the metal trim pretrude and will rip your fingers open if not careful,(and scratch your bike as mentioned in another post) The guy who made mine didn't even bother to remove the alignment marks for the trim, ok these things can be easily sorted but at the price paid they should be perfect, If I had the choice again I would have my own seat re sculptured especially when I saw the same seats at a bike show on sale for £50 cheaper. If anyone in the UK is after one let me know please, I will do a p/x deal for an efi std seat.
mine arrived yesterday, and as post above, marks still on seat, and them little screws underneath could have been finished better..But the seat is comfy, looks great, easy install , dont think it raises or lowers you anymore than the stocker.. overall very happy for the price, a seat out here in aus would set you back twice +the price of these..and another thing for those with the efi tanks like myself, too my eyes the seat actually gives the impression of the tank being smaller, guess because of the stepped design and higher passenger section..which is a big +
Thanks for getting back to me 68. From your pics in anothe rpost the seat looks really nice. I like everything about it. I noticed some other people aren't too happy with it. There are other options like having your own seat re-done by Tony Archer in the UK, Bitchin Stichin in the US, and I'm sure theirs others.
Yes I should have gone to Tony Archer for mine, regret it now,
