95 S3 Footpeg/shifer loose

I have a 95 Spd Trip and the shifter footpeg (and so therefore the entire shift linkage assy) is loose. Can't tell what the attachment is on the backside as the swingarm blocks getting a look at it, much less get a finger on it or a wrench in there...
The peg swivels along it's axis as well as moves fore and aft, up/down.
Peeled the rubber plug (that goes through the shift bar) directly above the peg off, but no allen bolt like I was hoping to find. Is it a pressed bushing?
Anybody else had this problem?
Posted this on S3 forum, but since many of the early models are the same construction in this area I though I would ask here as well.
Thanks.
