hey jerry... i also have a 96 bird...u need a 18mm socket..the one i bought at the local ace hardware fit just right down the hole .. yes u need an extension .. now once u get the plug loose enough to come out , take a some plastic tubing(old fuel line work works good )..put a slice down the side with a razor knife about 1/2 inch ...then u can push the tubing over the plug and pull it out....works good try it..that center hole can be tough but it will come out...good luck.....tom
