Hi Greytop-If your forks are similar to the TBIRDS the dampening rods will spin unless you secure the unit from the top. On mine there is a 6 sided indent on the top of the rod. I fashioned a brass plumbing cap close to the indent size on top of a stell 3 foot rod. Once you have the dampening rod held in place, you can untighten the allen head at the bottom of the fork tube. Triumph actualy makes an special tool for this (at least for ther TBIRDS)...sound like you have the same set up. I have seen where people cram a broom handle into the indent and this holds it enough to lossen it but I am not one that like splinters in my forks.......hope this helps.
