Hi RGood!
I never had the stock chrome mirrors but I'm about to score a pair. What I have now are black flat-glass round mirrors with pretty long stems. I'm going to try the stock mirrors and see if I can see more than my upper arms. I'll let you know what happens.
When I bought my red Honda from Dryer's, pop Dryer was still alive and around. He was a character from the really old days, before WWII, and I remember hearing that he'd invented an articulated sidecar - so the motorcycle would lean when you went around corners. I think he and his son Junior built race cars too, maybe midgets or larger cars. It was a pretty famous family.
I went to school in Bloomington, didn't do worth a ****, then left for California and never came back for more than a few days. I gotta say: I have always kinda missed Bloomington. I worked for Fox's Cycle Sales there and for the old Honda shop, Stewart's Speed-Sport out in Ellettsville.
Especially if you haven't done a ton of riding, RGood, please don't sacrifice rear vision for style. You don't want to take your eyes off the road in front of you for more than an instant, and you want to see as much as you can of what's back there when you do look in your mirrors. Blind spots are bad in a car but they're worse on a m/c.
I'll be in touch thru the forum about the stock mirrors. Maybe they ARE useless... your friend Maynard
