Unhappy Rear wheel install Help

I guess I had it coming for saying this is the easiest bike to work on I ever owned. Pride before the fall. I replaced the rear tube for a flat and am having a time getting the rear wheel back on.
First off the axle spindle was very difficult to get through the wheel had to use a hammer to coax it. Now when I tighten up the axle nut the wheel is locked. The brake disc is pinned right to the caliper. I think I have the correct spacers on the right sides. The longer one is on the sprocket side and the shorter one is on the caliper side. I looked at the exploded view on the Bike bandit web site and it doesn't look like i am missing any washers or parts.
Does the spacer on the caliper side have a right and and a wrong way to place it in the wheel or doesn't it matter. Other than that I can't imagine what is wrong.
Help!! It is going to be 60 degrees today and I really wanted to go for a nice ride.
