Following up what Dave just said, an SV650 or Ninja 650 makes a very good bike to learn on, but don't think you have to stop there. I am racing a GSXR 600 this season, but I am seriously considering a 650 twin to race in a year or two. The label "beginner bike" is not condemnation at all. Just because it is a forgiving bike doesn't mean it isn't a great bike you can really rail on when you get some skill.
