Not quite, the fuel gauge is ion the RHS and the pump on the left....

I would have suggested changing the sender unit as I had a very similar problem on my 04 and that sorted it, but I see you've done that. The light and gauge are both driven by the sender so I would start to suspect a problem with the ECU, which converts the resistance seen at the sender into the appropriate signals for both the gauge and light.
