It could just be a broken wire.
Mine did the same and it was the wire to the ignition switch. Once the bike has been started the power relay keeps everything going. Once you shut off the relay clicks off and won't start again because there is no power to it. The offending wire was in the connector on the end of the ignition switch wire where it plugs into the main loom on the right hand side of the fairing. It gets pulled by the steering.
Lucky I was at home but it took a fair time to work out what the problem was.
I know I have an '02 but I beleive the set up is similar to the earlier ones.
