They aren't listening to their current customers, they are (presumable) listening to their potential future customers. Triumph are trying to get a share of the HUGE 1500/1600cc HD & Jap cruiser market in the US. A 1200cc bike may appeal to someone after a jap cruiser with little brand loyalty, but I doubt a HD buyer would be tempted. But those few extra cc (and you'd hope hp & torque) could swing it...

But given that I'm not in the market for a jap cruiser or HD, I am useless at market research and am not American so can't really comment on their thought processes, this may not be a 100% water tight argument
