Crash Mushrooms

Hi, I know that it is common knowledge on this site that crash bars are a good idea given the Tiger is easy to drop when handling in the garage etc, but has any one fitted the plastic mushrooms / sliders? If so have you had cause to use them and how did they fare against bars. I know deep down that bars are a better protection against dropping the bike but I don't really want to put them on my bike.
The mushrooms are a lot less conspicuous. On the negative side, they are only plastic Knobs that cost the same as bars.

Who will set my mind at ease as to where I should spend my hard earned?
