Schuberth S1
Well I finally managed to test drive the S1 yesterday and thought I'd share my opinions. First off, this lid is seriously comfy - I've never worn a lid that feels so plush and fits me so well. Now, Schuberth do like to blather on about how quiet this lid is and I have to say that compared to my old Synchrotec this is a VERY quiet lid. Until you open the chin vents, that is (which open outwards, unusually. Should be interesting in the rain!). Now I know that the vents shouldn't really be open much in winter, but unfortunately, the anti-fog coating seemed to be a little weak at first, meaning that I had to ride either with the visor cracked open a notch or have the chin vents open. That said, it was -4 celsius and even my Shoei had started to fog the day before and that has a pinlock on it, so I'll cut the new lid a little slack there, and it also started to sort itself out as the day wore on - almost like it needed a few good foggings before it realised it was supposed to be anti-fog!
This lid is also extremely toasty. My head was not in the slightest bit frost-bitten after 4 hours out in sub-zero temperatures - which is more than I can say for my poor hands - and the vents on top feel like they give good air, if you know what I mean. Also, the skirt around the bottom of the lid stops most of the 'fresh' breezes that come walloping up under the lid on my Shoei - just as well really, as I'd forgotten my neck warmer, but it didn't matter as I didn't need it anyway. I remember when this lid first came out, reviews were also going on about how heavy it was (over 1700g), but it would appear that they've trimmed the fat on it and it's now a more acceptable 1525g (lighter than my Shoei, although that is a flip-up). I found that the flip down sun-visor was fantastic, meaning that even with the low winter sun, I never once needed to pull over and put my shades on, I just flipped the little switch on the left side of the lid and, hey presto, could carry on riding and actually see where I was going.
Speaking of seeing where I was going, the visor on this thing seems absolutely huge, so much so that I can't see the sides of the lid in my peripheral vision, making me feel safer and more aware of what's going on around me. I've ordered a breath guard for the lid which should hopefully sort out the fogging issue and was a **** sight cheaper than getting a pinlock visor, which would also reduce the peripheral vision.
All in all, I like this lid, and the fact that it had a 37% discount really helped keep me out of any major trouble with my wife. Anyway, 'scuse the ramblings, just thought I'd share! 8-)
