I envy you! I used to go out to the Big Bend for backpacking when I lived in Houston. The whole area is extraordinary. The town of Alpine is a good place to overnight, if need be (well, it was 20 years ago, anyway). Terlingua used to be a gas, though it might be all touristy by now.
One of the members on the SOHC4 forums is going down there soon, also. Maybe you all can trade notes.
