Actually a kick start would not have made a difference. The starter gear rides between the bendix and the crank gear. When the starter gear is thrown out of position, it binds and the engine will lock up. Just be glad that it didn't happen while you was riding. When replacing the cases, they will find it in the pump transfer pickup/plenum.

I wanted the kickstarter after I put it back together so I could ride it to work.
