This is done on several full-race machines - not at all a cost-cutting feature. Just due to frame/fork rigidity plus makes tuning a bunch easier (no more "off a click on the right"). Duc's doing this on the nearly $75,000 D16 so I doubt it has anything to do with cost at all.
The S3 is a great all-rounder - makes the right sounds, pretty decent handling, and absolutely gnarly in all respects. Even decent as a light-tourer (600 miles a day, no problems). Wheelies and power slides have never looked so good
