Just so no-one is under any misapprehensions, the lights do turn off when the starter button is engaged but of course are on as soon as ignition turned on, then again when the starter button released.
However I agree with the comments in the two posts immediately above.
It's not necessarily something I use frequently but just nice feature to have that capability for the maintenance etc. - it can easily be left in the 'on' position which replicates the standard behaviour anyway.
