True or not?

Broke a spoke on the rear wheel a couple of days ago so hadda order a replacement. My first inclination is that after installing the new spoke I should have the wheel "trued" again on a trueing stand. A buddy of mine says I can just tap all the spokes and make sure my newly installed one is tightened to the same "musical note" as the others. I think I gotta call BS on that one. Is it a given that on a properly trued wheel all the spokes will be tightened exactly the same amount? I say no, he says yes.
