Sweat - you got that right! You do have to make sure to hold the locking pin in place as you remove the cam so that the spring tension of the backlash gear holds the pin in place. (Don't ask me how I know this, aside from the fact I can say I'm happy I purchased the wrench to reset the backlash gear!).
